There are oils you have to work to understand, and there are oils that simply hand themselves to you the moment you open the bottle. Baghuda is the second kind. Unscrew the Pyrex and the air around you transforms — into vanilla ice cream, deep and slow and almost obscenely creamy, with a thread of honey running through it that feels less like a perfumery accord and more like a memory. We have opened a great many bottles of Burmese oud over the years, and we have never met one quite like this.
On the skin, the honey loosens its grip and the composition starts to bloom. Florals appear where the dairy was, a fine cream surfaces beneath them, and a quiet earthiness anchors the whole. Imagine a forest after rain — the resin, the petal, the soft black soil — but reorganised by some patient hand into a single, harmonious chord. This is high-class material. There is no other way to say it.
Then comes the twist. About forty minutes in, the gourmand opening begins to retreat, and a green jungle spice steps forward to take its place. The transition is genuinely astonishing — Burmese oils almost never travel this far in their drydown, and certainly not in this direction. What you end up with is closer in spirit to a fine Indonesian oil than to the Burmese oud you began with. Lush, verdant, a depth that suggests canopy and creeper rather than altar smoke.
Mesmerising. It really is an experience. We do not say that lightly, and we do not say it often.
